llapool is a fishing port full of hustle and bustle and a ferry terminal, providing a haven between the mysterious mountains and the splendid spread of the Summer Isles.

The village was built more than 200 years ago by the British Fisheries Society as a landing port for the huge herring catches that were made then. And though the herring are fewer, the village continues to be a thriving fishing centre.

For some years Eastern European factory ships, known as klondykers, out in the loch provided a colourful international flavour. But in the last few years these have become a more rare sight.

Ullapool is also the terminal for the main ferry to Stornoway in Lewis, so there is always something going on in the village.

There is an unbeatable range of activities for the visitor - including sea angling, boating, bathing, and exploring - and a number of visitor centres within easy travelling distance.

The town has its own award-winning museum, which tells the story of Lochbroom through traditional and multi-media displays in six languages. Ullapool Museum also features audiovisual and genealogy facilities.

To keep you fit, Lochbroom Leisure offer a leisure centre and swimming pool.

Corrieshalloch Gorge to the south of Ullapool is a magnificent sight, where the falls of Measach drop over 150 feet into the natural crack in the earth before emptying into Loch Broom.

North of Ullapool in the Coigach area is the crofting township of Achiltibuie where, at the smokehouse, seafish are smoked for dispatch.

Here can also be found the unique hydroponicum, where plants flourish without soil or artificial heating, just water.

The Achiltibuie Hydroponicum offers hourly guided tours around the Summer Isles Garden of the Future, which was designed and built by Robert Irvine. Features include a cascading floral spiral, sub-tropical fruit trees and exotic flowers.

The area around Achiltibuie offers a host of visual delights and some tremendous unspoilt beaches as well, making the journey past Stac Pollaidh off the main route from Ullapool to northwest Sutherland well worthwhile.
